What Street Shelf keeps, who sees it and when it goes. Last changed 29 October 2026.
What we keep
- A shelf: its name, optional area label, usual loan length and invite code.
- Each neighbor: the first name, optional house label and optional "how to reach me" line they typed, and a fingerprint (SHA-256) of their private link. Not the link itself, no email, no password.
- Things and loans: what is listed, who asked, dates, due dates and short notes.
- Counters: daily counts per address to stop abuse, kept only as a salted fingerprint and deleted after 3 days.
Who sees what
- Anyone with the shelf code: the shelf's things, first names and house labels, and who has what until when.
- "How to reach me" is shown only to the other neighbor in a loan that is out, while it is out.
- The keeper sees the list of neighbors' first names and house labels.
How long
Leave a shelf (or be removed by its keeper) and your name, things, open asks and notes are deleted at once. Loans you were part of stay in the shelf’s history with "(left)" in place of your name and no note. Closed loans are deleted after 365 days; a shelf nobody opens for 365 days is deleted with everything in it. Nightly database backups are kept 14 days.
What we never do
No ads, no trackers, no analytics, no third-party scripts or fonts, no email, no selling or sharing of data. The site sets no cookie except the one that protects forms from forgery.
Logs
Like any web server, the host keeps access logs with addresses and the pages asked for, which can include private links. Street Shelf's own error log masks private links.
