The lending card

Ten habits that keep lending between neighbors friendly. Written by Street Shelf as good practice, not rules from anyone official. Print it and tape it inside the garage door.

Borrowing from a neighbor

  1. Agree the return day before it leaves the porch. "Sunday evening" beats "when I'm done".
  2. Ask how it works. Thirty seconds at the handoff saves a broken chuck.
  3. Agree up front what happens if it breaks. Repair, replace, or split it: say it out loud.
  4. Return it clean, charged and with every piece. Blade guards, cords, the little key.
  5. Return it a little early when you can. Nobody ever minded.
  6. Say so the same day something goes wrong. Before they find out from the shelf.
  7. Use consumables, replace consumables. If you ran the tank dry, top it up.
  8. Do not lend it on. The owner lent it to you.
  9. Lenders: say no when you need to. Mark things away; no reason owed.
  10. Say thank you. Tomatoes count.
